1v1 - Double

Place four mannequins or tall cones outside the penalty area. Players start at their respective cones. On a signal, the players start by running around the front cone and turning back toward the starting position. The coach passes the ball between the first set of mannequins/cones. The first player to arrive moves toward the goal and takes a shot. Immediately after the shot, the coach plays a new ball to the second player, who then attacks in a 1v1 situation.

1v1 - Speed

Two players start at the same distance from the goals. Both run around their respective goals and enter the box. The coach plays the ball into the center of the box; the player who wins possession becomes the attacker, and the other becomes the defender. Challenge/defend. If no coach is available, the ball can be pre-positioned inside the box.

1v1 - Defend

A simple 1v1 drill focusing on defense, specifically how the defender approaches, shows patience, and makes decisions. The attacker must get past the yellow cones before shooting at the small goal. 1 point for scoring in the small goal; 2 points if the player passes between the two pink cones. The drill begins with the defender passing the ball to the attacker. The defender approaches the attacker and must position themselves correctly to cover both the goal and the run towards the cones. It is important for the defender to maintain the right distance, steer the opponent away from the goal, and protect the central area.

1v1 - Creativity

Create high-tempo 1v1 situations where players must challenge their defender. The ball carrier should always try to score in the two goals on the side opposite to where they started. Keep the tempo high and challenge the players to be creative.

1v1 - Rectangle

Mark out a square. Place one defender on each side and a ball carrier in the center. The defenders must stay on the lines and are not allowed to press. The objective is for the player with the ball to create space by threatening the defenders, ultimately generating enough room to exit the square with the ball.

1v1 - Movement

Build confidence in 1v1 situations without physical contact. A good starting point for players who hesitate during 1v1 play. Two players face each other, positioned on opposite sides of a line of cones. The player with the ball attempts to outmaneuver the opponent and dribble through one of the side gates.

1v1 - Side line

Have your wide players practice taking on opponents along the sideline. Mark out a 10x10 meter square. Position the attacker at the bottom-left cone and the defender at the top-right cone. The defender starts with the ball and initiates the drill by passing it to the attacker. The attacker receives the ball and challenges the defender by either going down the outside or cutting inside. The defender is restricted to defending within the square. Once the attacker breaks through, they finish by shooting at one of the mini-goals.

1v1 - Steer attacker

The defender should pressure the attacker by angling their body and opening up space towards the sideline. Force the player out towards the line, using your arm against their upper body to maintain distance and push the opponent outward. Step in front of the attacker and try to time your challenge to coincide with a poor touch. Remember – the sideline is your teammate!

1v1 - Target

The drill focuses on receiving the ball with one's back to the goal and maintaining possession. The attacker receives a pass from the goalkeeper with their back to the goal, while the defender rushes up to challenge. The attacker should seek physical contact, control the ball, and attempt to turn towards the goal to take on the defender 1v1 and subsequently shoot.

1v1 - Technical

A simple 1v1 drill focusing on both defense and finishing. The attacker dribbles through four cones. The defender starts running from between their own cones when the attacker passes to the coach or a wall. The players then face each other in a 1v1 situation.

1v1 -> 2v1 -> 3v2

Challenge the players with rapid transitions between attack and defense. Enhance their ability to react quickly and organize themselves to find the right positions. Mark out a pitch, approximately 30x40m. Position the players at the goalposts of the two goals. On the coach's signal, the drill begins with a blue player dribbling towards the goalkeeper in a 1v1 situation. After the shot, the coach blows the whistle, and two red players enter the pitch with a ball; the blue player who took the shot must now defend in a 2v1 scenario. The coach blows the whistle again—either upon a shot or if possession is lost. Two blue players then enter the pitch with a ball. The blue team now attacks 3v2 against the two red players.

2v1 Overlap

An exercise focusing on overlapping runs and finishing against a defender to build confidence in timing and movement. Two attackers execute an overlap outside the penalty area, with a defender applying pressure to the ball carrier. The overlapping player must get their movement and timing right to avoid being offside, while the player with the ball needs to deliver a well-weighted pass. As the defender tracks the ball, the second attacker makes a run toward the far post, ready to receive a pass.

2v2 Defend crosses

The players defend against crosses while facing their own goal (red)! 2v2: all four players start on the same side as the goalkeeper distributes the ball to the sideline (white). A winger is positioned at the sideline to deliver the cross. After the cross and finish, the play transitions into a 3v2 situation as the winger moves onto the pitch to become the third attacking player. Note that the same team attacks in both phases. This drill is particularly interesting because the defenders are required to defend in different situations.

2v2 Gate

A drill focusing on defensive play, off-the-ball movement, mobility, and quick passing. The first touch must take the ball through the gate; after passing through, a pass must be made before attacking the goal. The first defender must round the far cone before entering the pitch to chase the ball carrier.

2v2 Fast attack

The goalkeeper throws the ball against a wall positioned high up the court. At the same time, two defenders and two attackers run out from the goal where the throw originated. 3 phase finishing

Combined attacking strategies in a single drill. Players practice attacking movements, passing combinations, and finishing at high intensity without interruption. Finishing actions vary between 1v1s against the goalkeeper, shots from the edge of the box, and connecting with crosses. Passing involves a mix of wall passes and crosses. Movements include scanning, shadow runs, overlaps, and positional rotations.

3rd player combination

Third-man finishing combination: an effective combination play designed to break down a compact defense. The sequence involves playing the ball to the feet of a player facing you, followed by a pass or run into the space behind the defensive line to finish the move. Keys to success include high-quality passing, angling the body to deliver an accurate pass, and precise timing to exploit the space while avoiding offside.

3man attack

A three-man attacking sequence ending in a finish. The ball is played between players facing the play. The first pass goes to a forward who is positioned to receive it facing forward; the forward plays a first-time pass back to the midfielder. As the initial pass is made, the wide players begin their runs. The midfielder plays a through ball to one of the wide players, who carries the ball forward and delivers a cross towards the forward or the wide player on the opposite flank.

3v2 Build up

Mark out a playing area as wide as the goal area, extending to the halfway line. Add an "offside line" just outside the slot. The attackers start at the halfway line, and the defenders start by the goalposts. The goalkeeper throws or shoots the ball out to any attacker. The defenders immediately rush up to the offside line while the attackers drive the ball forward. The attackers' goal is to draw both defenders toward one side, creating open space for the third attacker on the opposite side. They aim to create a scoring chance by staying onside and playing a pass to the far post, where the third attacker finishes. If a goal is scored, the drill restarts. In the event of a save or a missed shot, the goalkeeper quickly distributes the ball to one of the defenders, who must then attempt to score in one of the small goals via a quick counter-attack. The three original attackers then switch roles and become defenders.

3v3 - Break press

A good drill for practicing how to beat the press. Use movement and communication to play through the pressure. Set up a pitch (approx. 30x25m) involving seven outfield players and one goalkeeper. Divide the players into two teams: one with three players (Red team) and one with three players plus a target player (Blue team). Use a full-sized goal appropriate for the age group. Play begins with the goalkeeper distributing the ball to any teammate (Blue). The defending team (Red) immediately applies high pressure. The attacking team must now try to pass their way through the pressing team to reach their target player, who is positioned off the pitch at the end line. If the pressing team wins the ball, play immediately switches direction. Offside rules now apply to the Red team (depending on the age group). If the Blue team successfully passes to their target player, play switches in the same way, and the Red team now attacks.

3v3 depth

A practice drill that combines defensive play with attacking depth. Set up a relatively narrow pitch with small goals at each end. As soon as a blue player touches the ball, the red defenders may enter the pitch. The red player positioned along the sideline must first round the orange cone before they are permitted to pursue the attackers. The second pass must be played to the blue player furthest back. If the red team wins possession, the roles reverse: the play shifts, and the blue team becomes the defensive side. Maintain a high tempo, emphasize scanning, and ensure plenty of movement.

Ball control - Cones

Practice ball control! Set out eight cones. Arrange them in rows: the first two rows with approximately 1m spacing, and the final row with 0.5m spacing. Each player should have their own ball. First row: Dribble through the cones, using both feet with light touches and keeping the ball close to your body. After the last cone, sprint with the ball to the next row. Second row: Use only your weaker foot. Follow the same instructions—light touches, using both the inside and outside of the foot. After passing the last cone, sprint with the ball to the next row. Third row: Keep the ball closer to your feet. You may use both feet. After the last cone, sprint with the ball alongside the row of cones. Then, start over from the first row.

Distribution & Transitioning - 3v2

The aim of the drill is to generate movement during rapid transitions in order to disrupt the defense. The drill begins with the goalkeeper distributing the ball to any blue player. The player receiving the ball must always move into a central position. If the receiver is not the central player, the central player should make a crossing run with the ball carrier and take over their position. Create a numerical advantage to reach a crossing position. As the cross is prepared, the players should again make crossing runs to avoid becoming too predictable for the defense. The defenders' task is to communicate and find the right positioning to defend while outnumbered, while maximizing the outcome through correct placement and utilizing the goalkeeper.

The drill aims to develop the team's strength and endurance through repeated high-intensity pressing. The defenders start 10 meters outside the playing area. On the coach's signal, three defenders run in and initiate the press with maximum intensity. The defenders have 30 seconds to win the ball and score in one of the small goals. Once the 30 seconds are up, the defenders rotate with the next group. The attackers must keep moving constantly and evade the press through intelligent passing.

Two zones (A and B) with a "neutral zone" of 3–5 meters between them. Player number 6 starts in the neutral zone. Three attackers are positioned in Zone A and three in Zone B. The attackers in Zone A pass the ball among themselves, looking for an opportunity to play a firm, ground pass straight through the neutral zone to Zone B. Player number 6 is not permitted to enter the other zones but must move laterally to cover passing lanes and intercept the ball. Focus areas: footwork, the ability to read the ball carrier's eyes and body language, and maintaining correct positioning.

Play build-up

A good drill for build-up play. Block off a central zone (indicated by the dotted triangle) that neither players nor passes may cross. This forces the play out to the wide zones during the build-up phase. The defending team (red) consists of eight players, with four positioned in each half. These players may move freely when the ball is inside the penalty area; otherwise, they must stay within their respective "halves." The attacking team (blue) consists of six players plus a goalkeeper. Two players act as "defenders" and receive the ball from the goalkeeper. The other attacking players must stay within their "half." The two defenders are free to move and should enter the same zone when building up play. Phase 1: Play begins with the goalkeeper distributing the ball to a defender. The first pass must always be between the two defenders. If the red team blocks the pass to one flank, the defender in possession must play the ball back to the goalkeeper, who then switches play to the other side. Phase 2: The attacking team builds up play on one flank and scores by passing the ball into the mini-goal. Phase 3: If the red team wins the ball, they immediately transition to a counter-attack. All blue players drop back to defend. Focus on width and depth; utilize the goalkeeper in the build-up play to beat the opposition's pressing.
